O Negative

The Universal Donor

O Negative is known as the “universal donor” since their red blood cells can be received by anyone! This type of blood is extremely important in emergency trauma situations when blood must be transfused to save a patient’s life and blood type is not known and for premature infants. Only around 6% of the population has this powerful blood type.

For You

People with Type O- blood can ONLY receive O- blood.

Maximize Your Impact

To maximize your impact, Type O- donors are encouraged to donate Double Reds, which allows us to collect double the amount of Red Blood Cells as a regular donation. If a donor doesn't qualify for Double Reds, they are encouraged to donate whole blood as often as they can (every 8 weeks!) Read more about Double Red Donations here!
