Blood Donations Needed After Winter Storm Disruptions

NEW ORLEANS—Severe winter weather has impacted the Blood Center’s ability to collect blood donations, leaving some blood types below established minimum levels. The Blood Center urges all eligible citizens to donate now to maintain adequate supplies at all times, especially those with type O blood and those willing to donate platelets because these products have a limited shelf life (five days from collection). This will help replenish supplies affected by the unusual weather conditions we experienced this week. 

All blood collections on Tuesday and Wednesday were canceled due to weather-related disruptions. All donor center locations will reopen for business as usual on Thursday with extended hours of operation (please refer to the attached extended hours and additional openings from tomorrow through Monday, 1/27/25). “Nationwide, blood donations have been significantly impacted," said Billy Weales, President and CEO of The Blood Center. “Recent arctic conditions have resulted in a decrease in donor turnout. We cannot rely on external help – this is about our local communities stepping up to care for our own.  Blood cannot be manufactured; it depends entirely on the generosity of our community.”

Fast Facts About Donating Blood:

• Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent) and present a photo ID.
• The donation process takes less than an hour.
• Every three seconds, someone needs blood.
• Individuals can donate blood every 56 days.
